Makeup and beauty mishaps are real. Your eyes, skin, and hair are not a car door — the damage is often permanent.

  • Patch test 24 hours first. Put any new product on a small patch of skin (inner arm) a day before it goes near your face. Cosmetic allergies are common and can be severe.
  • Nothing goes IN your eye. Scratched corneas from mascara wands and liner pencils are the most common makeup injury. Never use a product near your eye that is not sold for the eye area.
  • Lash and wig adhesive only. Never super glue, nail glue, or any household adhesive on skin, lashes, or scalp. These cause chemical burns and have sealed eyes shut.
  • No product substitutes. Hair spray, spray adhesive, and construction glue are not cosmetics. People have been hospitalized following internet beauty hacks.
  • Sharp tools cut and infect. Dermaplaning blades, cuticle nippers, and tweezers need clean hands and clean tools. Do not share them.
  • Chemicals burn. Dye, bleach, relaxers, peels, and removers: follow the manufacturer’s timing exactly, ventilate the room, and never mix two products.
  • Old and shared makeup carries bacteria. Do not share eye or lip products, and replace mascara every three months.
  • If it stings, burns, swells, or your vision changes — stop. Rinse with cool water and get medical help. Do not push through it.

โš ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings

๐Ÿ“‹ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)

1

Protect Your Space and Skin

Drape an old towel over your shoulders and put on gloves. Smooth a thin layer of petroleum jelly or balm along your hairline and ear tips. Comb hair into four clipped quadrants โ€” front-left, front-right, back-left, back-right โ€” so the scalp is visible along each part.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Hairline and ear tips show a thin visible layer of balm
  • โ€ข Hair is parted into four clipped sections with the scalp visible along each part
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Skipping the barrier balm and getting stain on the skin
  • โ€ข Sectioning too coarsely, so each section is too thick to saturate evenly
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Keep balm away from the eyes and lash line.
2

Mix Color and Developer Right Before Applying

Combine the color tube and developer in the exact ratio the box specifies, in a bowl or the kit's own bottle. Mix until it is one uniform color and texture, with no streaks of unblended cream or developer.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Mixture is a single uniform color and texture with no visible streaks
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Mixing the full batch and then pausing, so it starts developing before it's applied
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Mix in a well-ventilated space, away from your face.
3

Apply to Roots or Ends First โ€” Know Which

For a root touch-up, apply to the new-growth band first โ€” scalp heat processes it faster. For virgin, all-over color, apply to mid-lengths and ends first and save the roots for roughly the last 10 minutes, which evens out that same heat difference. Work in thin, quarter-inch layers within each quadrant.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Every section shows full, opaque saturation with no dry or translucent strands when lifted
  • โ€ข Color reaches the scalp in the root area without pooling heavily on the skin
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Applying roots and ends at the same time on virgin hair, over-processing the ends while the roots finish
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Change gloves if they tear or product soaks through.
4

Comb Through and Start the Timer

Once a section is fully applied, comb it through so color coats every strand evenly. Set a timer to your strand-test result or the box's maximum processing time, whichever is shorter.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Comb passes through each section smoothly, showing even color on every strand
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Setting the timer to the box's maximum instead of the shorter time an actual strand test showed
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Don't wrap hair tightly in plastic unless your specific kit calls for it โ€” some formulas build heat under a cap and over-process.
5

Check a Strand Partway Through

At roughly two-thirds of the timer, wipe a small section clean with a damp cloth and compare it to the box's target shade.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Wiped strand shows a color visibly close to the box's target shade
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Checking for the first time only when the timer ends, leaving no room to correct a fast-processing formula
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: If the scalp is burning or stinging rather than just tingling, rinse immediately regardless of the timer.
6

Rinse, Condition, and Inspect

Rinse with lukewarm to cool water until it runs clear, then apply the kit's included conditioner. Once dry, check the result in good, even light.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Rinse water runs clear rather than colored
  • โ€ข Color reads even from roots to ends with no visible line at the regrowth border
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Rinsing with hot water, which reopens the cuticle and releases fresh color right back out
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Keep the kit's conditioner away from your eyes while rinsing.
