Deep clean and sanitize your makeup sponge in minutes using warm water, liquid cleanser, and gentle massage techniques to strip pigment and prevent mold.

⚠️ Read this before you start

Makeup and beauty mishaps are real. Your eyes, skin, and hair are not a car door — the damage is often permanent.

  • Patch test 24 hours first. Put any new product on a small patch of skin (inner arm) a day before it goes near your face. Cosmetic allergies are common and can be severe.
  • Nothing goes IN your eye. Scratched corneas from mascara wands and liner pencils are the most common makeup injury. Never use a product near your eye that is not sold for the eye area.
  • Lash and wig adhesive only. Never super glue, nail glue, or any household adhesive on skin, lashes, or scalp. These cause chemical burns and have sealed eyes shut.
  • No product substitutes. Hair spray, spray adhesive, and construction glue are not cosmetics. People have been hospitalized following internet beauty hacks.
  • Sharp tools cut and infect. Dermaplaning blades, cuticle nippers, and tweezers need clean hands and clean tools. Do not share them.
  • Chemicals burn. Dye, bleach, relaxers, peels, and removers: follow the manufacturer’s timing exactly, ventilate the room, and never mix two products.
  • Old and shared makeup carries bacteria. Do not share eye or lip products, and replace mascara every three months.
  • If it stings, burns, swells, or your vision changes — stop. Rinse with cool water and get medical help. Do not push through it.

โš ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings

๐Ÿ“‹ Step-by-Step Guide (5 Steps)

1

Saturate and expand the sponge

Hold the dry sponge directly under a stream of warm running water. Continuously squeeze and release the sponge in your fist until it absorbs water and expands to roughly double its original dry size.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Sponge appears visibly swollen to twice its starting volume
  • โ€ข Foam is completely drenched with water flowing evenly from all sides when squeezed
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Applying soap while the sponge core is still dry
  • โ€ข Using cold water that fails to loosen oil-based foundation
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Keep water temperature lukewarm to avoid scalding your hands.
2

Apply cleanser to stained areas

Dispense a nickel-sized amount of liquid cleanser directly onto the most heavily stained sections of the wet sponge. Gently press the cleanser into the sponge surface with your thumb so it penetrates into the foam.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Thick pool of cleanser is visible across the colored foundation spots
  • โ€ข Cleanser begins turning the color of the trapped makeup
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Using too little soap on heavily coated surfaces
  • โ€ข Spreading soap only on clean edges while missing the tip
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Avoid scented or abrasive household cleaners that can cause facial skin irritation later.
3

Massage and work the lather into the core

Gently massage the sponge using the flat pads of your fingers and palms. Roll and compress the sponge repeatedly, drawing foundation up from the inner core to the outer surface in a colored lather.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Rich, dense lather covers the sponge
  • โ€ข Foam lather turns beige, brown, or pink as foundation lifts out
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Digging sharp fingernails into the sponge material
  • โ€ข Twisting or wringing the sponge aggressively
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Keep fingers flat to prevent ripping the delicate hydrophilic polyurethane material.
4

Rinse thoroughly until water runs clear

Hold the sponge under warm running water while repeatedly compressing and releasing your grip. Continue flushing the sponge until all bubbles and discolored residue wash away entirely.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Water squeezed out of the sponge is 100% transparent and bubble-free
  • โ€ข Original sponge color is restored with no visible foundation rings
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Stopping the rinse while soap residue remains inside the foam
  • โ€ข Rinsing without squeezing, leaving trapped dirty water in the core
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: None.
5

Towel blot and set to air dry

Wrap the sponge in a clean, dry towel and squeeze firmly to extract excess water. Place the damp sponge upright on a ventilated drying stand or open-air cup in a well-ventilated room.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Towel shows heavy wet imprint without transferring pigment
  • โ€ข Sponge sits upright with full air exposure on all sides
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Placing a damp sponge back into an enclosed makeup bag or acrylic drawer
  • โ€ข Drying the sponge flat on a counter where the underside stays wet
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Allow sponge to dry fully before sealing away to prevent black mold and bacterial proliferation.
