How to Install and Melt a Lace Wig

Learn how to prepare your hairline, secure a bald cap, apply lace adhesive, cut jagged lace, and melt the frontal seam for an undetectable wig install.

Makeup and beauty mishaps are real. Your eyes, skin, and hair are not a car door — the damage is often permanent.

  • Patch test 24 hours first. Put any new product on a small patch of skin (inner arm) a day before it goes near your face. Cosmetic allergies are common and can be severe.
  • Nothing goes IN your eye. Scratched corneas from mascara wands and liner pencils are the most common makeup injury. Never use a product near your eye that is not sold for the eye area.
  • Lash and wig adhesive only. Never super glue, nail glue, or any household adhesive on skin, lashes, or scalp. These cause chemical burns and have sealed eyes shut.
  • No product substitutes. Hair spray, spray adhesive, and construction glue are not cosmetics. People have been hospitalized following internet beauty hacks.
  • Sharp tools cut and infect. Dermaplaning blades, cuticle nippers, and tweezers need clean hands and clean tools. Do not share them.
  • Chemicals burn. Dye, bleach, relaxers, peels, and removers: follow the manufacturer’s timing exactly, ventilate the room, and never mix two products.
  • Old and shared makeup carries bacteria. Do not share eye or lip products, and replace mascara every three months.
  • If it stings, burns, swells, or your vision changes — stop. Rinse with cool water and get medical help. Do not push through it.

โš ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings

๐Ÿ“‹ Step-by-Step Guide (7 Steps)

1

Cleanse Scalp and Prep Natural Hair

Braid natural hair flat to the scalp or slick it back into a low, flat bun. Wipe your entire forehead and hairline with an alcohol-soaked cotton pad to remove all natural oils, makeup, and sweat.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Natural hair sits completely flat against the skull with no high bulges.
  • โ€ข Forehead skin along the hairline appears matte with zero oily sheen.
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Leaving residual skincare or oils on the skin, preventing glue adherence.
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Keep isopropyl alcohol away from the eyes and open scratches.
2

Fit and Tint the Wig Cap

Pull a nude stocking cap down over your eyebrows and ears. Use an edge brush to dab pressed powder matching your skin tone along the front 2 inches of the cap, blending any harsh cap lines.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข The stocking cap is pulled taut with no wrinkles.
  • โ€ข The cap hairline color seamlessly matches the forehead skin tone.
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Using a cap shade that is too light, creating a visible grey cast under the lace.
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Do not pull the stocking cap so tight that it restricts circulation or irritates ear tops.
3

Align and Tint the Lace Front

Flip the wig inside out and lightly press matching powder foundation onto the underside of the lace grid using a brush. Place the wig onto your head, aligning the center part and ear tabs exactly with your natural symmetry.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Lace grid knots are color-matched and no longer show white dots.
  • โ€ข Ear tabs sit squarely above the ears without folding or overlapping ear cartilage.
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Applying liquid foundation to the lace, which cakes and clogs hair knots.
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Ensure wig adjustment straps are not over-tightened to prevent tension headaches.
4

Apply Adhesive and Set to Tacky

Roll the lace edge back 1 inch. Apply a thin, even layer of lace holding spray or adhesive directly to the skin roughly 1/8 inch in front of your natural hairline. Blow dry on the cool setting until the product turns completely clear and tacky.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Adhesive line is uniformly transparent with no white or cloudy milky spots.
  • โ€ข Surface looks glossy and feels sticky when lightly tapped with a gloved finger.
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Laying lace onto wet, white adhesive before it becomes tacky, causing slippage.
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Never apply adhesive directly on top of your natural baby hairs.
5

Lay Lace and Trim the Excess

Pull the lace forward over the tacky zone and press firmly into the skin using the fine teeth of a rat-tail comb. Once secured, cut the excess lace along the hairline in tiny, jagged zigzag motions with an eyebrow razor or curved scissors.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Lace lies flat against the skin without lifting tabs or air bubbles.
  • โ€ข Hairline edge is subtly jagged and organic, not a straight blunt line.
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Cutting the lace in a straight, blunt line, which creates an obvious visible border.
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Rest the back of your hand against your forehead to stabilize the blade and prevent accidental nicks.
6

Melt with Elastic Band

Mist a light veil of holding spray onto the exposed lace edge and press it smooth with your fingers. Wrap an elastic melting band tightly across the entire perimeter of the lace and leave it secured for 10 to 15 minutes.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Elastic band sits flat, tightly covering the entirety of the frontal hairline.
  • โ€ข No stray hair strands are trapped sideways underneath the band.
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Removing the melting band prematurely before the adhesive is fully cured and set.
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Do not tie the elastic band so tightly that your temples or forehead feel numbness or pain.
7

Reveal and Style Hairline

Carefully unfasten the melting band from back to front. Use an edge brush and a drop of styling mousse to gently comb out soft baby hairs or brush all hair cleanly back into the desired style.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข The lace boundary is completely invisible against the forehead skin.
  • โ€ข Hair flows naturally out of the scalp with no visible grid, white glue lines, or lifted edges.
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Ripping the band off abruptly, which can snag and pull up freshly melted lace.
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Ensure no mousse or hair styling products enter the eyes during final styling.
